Main Frame Pawl and Spring Replacement

The basic design of our Lug-All Come Along Ratchet Winch Hoist hasn’t changed much since its creation in 1949. This design includes the main frame pawl spring. But, as in most cases, there is often room to improve. When Lug-All engineers took a close look at the design of the main frame pawl spring, they discovered that certain extreme impact conditions could cause the spring to become dislodged.

To address this concern, they decided to make a small change to the design of the pawl spring. Originally, the design had the spring hooked around its anchor point and snapped into place against the pawl. To eliminate the possibility of becoming dislodged from impact, the pawl was given a small hole where a hook on the spring is inserted. With the spring hooked into the pawl and around the anchor, it can no longer be dislodged from an impact.

This spring and pawl design still allows you to replace the spring with only a few tools if it becomes worn out. If you have a Lug-All winch hoist with the original pawl spring design, you can also use a replacement kit to convert it to the redesigned spring and pawl. To do so, simply follow these steps.

 

Step 1:

For models with an external lever, use a 1/8-inch punch to remove the roll pins from the external lever and the main frame pawl. For models without an external lever, use a pair of needle-nose pliers to remove the c-clip from the main frame pawl shaft. Discard the roll pins or c-clip.

Step 2:

Remove the main frame pawl shaft and the old pawl and spring.

Step 3:

Assemble the new pawl and spring by inserting the leg of the spring into the small hole in the pawl. The small loop of the spring should face the top of the pawl near the cutout.

Step 4:

Place the small loop of the spring around the spring anchor on the mainframe.

Step 5:

With the new pawl and spring in place, insert the main frame pawl shaft through the pawl and into the main frame.

Step 6:

For models with an external lever, use a hammer and a 1/8-inch punch to install new roll pins into the pawl and the lever, ensuring that the pins are flush with the pawl and lever surfaces. For models without an external lever, use a pair of needle-nose pliers to install a new c-clip onto the pawl shaft, ensuring that the c-clip sits completely in the groove.
